Grand Rapids, MI

Hi.  I'm Mike Dokter.  I've ridden the coat tails of others.  I hang out with people who are much more talented and much smarter than I am.  I consistently work to learn as much as I can from these people so I can help others along their journey as well.

Riding the coat tails...

This is me...

I've ridden the coat tails of others. To be specific, of those I respect. That may sound manipulative, but I've found it to be one of the most brilliant decisions I've made in life so far.

My life is not extraordinary in the sense that I don't have a bullet point list of amazing accomplishments. Yes, I have multiple college degrees. Yes, I've worked for some major companies that everyone has heard of.  I have some accomplishments that I'm very proud of, and, because of them, I've had the opportunity to teach at the University level. Ironically, none of these accomplishments in my life brought me fulfillment; perhaps you can relate.

All this to say that right now, one of the more important things in my life is allowing myself to be coached and coaching others. We all need a mentor or mentors and, I believe, should ultimately have the goal of passing our knowledge on to others. The need for guidance is part of the human condition instilled in us as children; but many of us think there is a point when we've outgrown it. We have a checklist of things we're supposed to do: school, marriage, kids, career, etc. But checklists can only measure accomplishments, not significance. It is a person’s character that allows them to be significant, and character cannot be earned on paper.

My journey is one discovery. Who am I and what does the world need me to do? I've ridden the coat tails of those who can answer that question for themselves and hope that it will allow me to impart some wisdom on others.
